Into The Trees

A collection of paintings exploring the experience of time from a forest's perspecitve

Years spent studying and practicing forestry, and more recently, climbing and researching trees, has opened my eyes to the delicate and spiraling nature of the living architecture within which we carry out our lives. This collection of paintings animates trees and forest ecosystems, embodying movement that takes place over decades or centuries--change that is virtually imperceptible on the human timescale.

Gallery Feature : H + H Arts Santa Fe

Into The Trees will be featured as part of a group show titled "Rooted" at H + H Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The show opens on December 5, 2026 and will run for 6 weeks until _____. The show will include original paintings by yours truly, photography by Nina Riggio, ceramic sculpture by Avi Farber, a hanging cone installation, a panel discussion, ponderosa pine soda, and much more.

H + H Arts is pleased to present Rooted, an exhibition featuring artists Avi Farber, Nina Riggio, and Erin Burk, whose work collectively expands our idea of community beyond the human to include the forest itself—the trees, fungi, and undergrowth that we too often take for granted. There are no people without trees. History is full of societies that consumed the forests sustaining them, only to discover a little too late, that there was a limit to what could be taken.

This exhibition offers photography, painting, and ceramics as interactions with climatic changes putting us directly into experience with them. In the U.S., an average of 70,000 wildfires have burned each year over the last decade, 90% of them human-caused. For more than a century, we have suppressed the low-intensity fires that once regularly moved through many of our forests, interrupting a natural cycle and allowing fuels to accumulate. Now, as the planet warms, fire returns to landscapes increasingly primed to burn with unprecedented intensity, partly a consequence of the very systems we built to keep fire away. Through photography, sculpture, and installation, Farber, Riggio, and Burk offer not just an elegy for what’s been lost, but a cantation, a call and invocation, for what might still be restored.

As the living architecture within which our communities thrive, forests offer far more than shade and structure. Each tree, shrub, mushroom, and blade of grass carries an essential presence — one that Western society has long been incentivized to neglect, extract from, and exploit. Farber, Riggio, and Burk turn their lenses and materials toward this neglect, asking viewers to reconsider what it means to be in relation with a forest rather than merely in possession of it.

Harming the forest is harming ourselves. A relationship of reciprocity long practiced by Indigenous cultures — that if we care for the land, the land cares for us — is finally starting to gain awareness in the Western consciousness. Rooted sits within this emergence, mourning what has been lost to negligence while imagining what reconnection and reconciliation might look like.

Choosing Your Print

Want to bring a piece of Into The Trees home? There are a few ways to do it, depending on how you want it to look on your wall.

Fine Art Print — simple + flexible

Printed on high-quality fine art paper, this is the most flexible option. It comes unframed, so you can choose your own frame, mat, or display style. Great if you already have a frame in mind or want to make it your own.

Framed Fine Art Print — classic + clean

A high-quality poster print finished in a frame for an easy, polished look. The artwork is printed on cold press paper and displayed behind glass, giving it a more traditional framed-art feel. A good choice if you like crisp lines, a little structure, and the classic look of artwork behind glass.

Framed Canvas Print — warm + dimensional

Printed directly onto canvas and stretched around a 1.25" thick frame, then finished with a natural oak floating frame. The canvas has a softer, more textured feel than paper and gives the artwork a little more depth on the wall. The image wraps around the edges of the canvas with a mirrored border, and the frame leaves a little space to give the feeling of the canvas floating within it. Hanging wire is installed, so it arrives ready to hang.

Not sure which one?

Go with the fine art print if you want flexibility, the framed print if you like a classic framed-art look, or the framed canvas if you want something that feels a little more substantial and appears like an original.
